Common questions
Does Crate work with Spotify and Apple Music?
Yes, either one. Choose in Settings, under Music Service. Every feature works in both. Your crates, notes and mixtapes are kept for each service separately.
What can I ask the Clerk?
Anything you'd say to a friend behind the counter: a mood, a decade, an occasion, how long, a tempo or key, "like Tom Waits but not Tom Waits", songs you haven't played since 2012. Tap What Can I Ask? on the Clerk page for the full list. The Clerk only picks songs you already have.
The Clerk says it's still learning. Why?
To choose by tempo, energy or mood, Crate looks up how each of your songs sounds and how listeners describe it. With a big library that takes a while. It happens while Crate is open, and a little overnight while your device charges. The Clerk's page shows how far it has got.
Does the Clerk need Apple Intelligence?
It reads your words best with Apple Intelligence turned on (on devices that support it). Without it, the Clerk still works by picking out the words it knows, such as decades, moods and lengths.
Some covers are missing in Apple Music mode.
Albums that are in your iCloud Music Library but not downloaded don't always hand their covers to other apps. Crate looks those covers up in Apple Music's catalogue instead, so they fill in over the first few minutes after an update.
How do mixtapes stay up to date?
A mixtape is a set of rules, like "added in the last month" or "the '90s and not played lately", so it refills as your library changes. You can also save any Clerk list as a mixtape, or have it pick fresh every week.
Does it sync between my iPhone and iPad?
Yes, through your own iCloud account: crates, mixtapes, notes, pins and play history. Make sure iCloud is on for Crate in the Settings app on both devices.
How do I see my whole listening history?
Open Stats, then Listening. Every Play lists each year, month and day, down to each song. Spotify only shares your last 50 plays, so Crate keeps each one as it goes. Connect Last.fm in Settings to bring in everything you've scrobbled before that.
Does Crate work in the car and with Siri?
Yes. Crate has a CarPlay app with Home, Pick Up Where You Left Off, your mixtapes and your library. You can also say "Ask the Clerk" to Siri.
What does Crate do with my data?
It keeps it on your devices and in your own iCloud. There's no Crate account and no Crate server. The Privacy Policy lists every service Crate talks to and exactly what it sends.
